"They conclude that ‘it is time for the intellectual walls that separate civil society, social movement and non-profit service sector theories to come down’ adding that ‘throughout their life cycle, they move back and forth through different configurations of civil society, especially as they respond to macro social, political and cultural forces that affect the balance of relations among its constituent elements’ (Hasenfeld and Gidron, 205:109) This book seeks to adopt that broad approach to civil society, arguing that it provides the ethical foundations of democracy and that its renaissance represents a deepening of democracy in an age when the oligarchical influences of global corporate capital threaten its integrity as much as an overweening state. Civil society is about promoting liberty. It is also about sustaining equality. This democratic paradox constitutes both a strength and a weakness."
